Smarane onde Salade Govindana- Isn't meditating on Govinda's holy name alone enough?

This is one of the most popular devaranamas composed by Sri Purandara Dasa. There are so many versions available on Youtube (for example, see link below), but they are all shortened versions- almost no one has rendered the entire song.

In this song Sri Purandara Dasa extols the virtue of remembering the Lord's name (Govinda) with devotion, and tells us that medidating on His name alone is enough to bring us good things (and keep bad things away) in this life.

Smarane onde salade, Govindana, Naama onde salade,

Smarane=remembering (meditating upon), onde=alone, salade=is it not enough?

Govindana=Govinda’s, Naama=holy name, onde=alone, salade=is it not enough?

Meaning: Sri Purandara Dasa tells us that constantly meditating on Govinda’s name alone is enough for our well being in life. Here one is reminded of the promise made by Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita that he will take care of anyone who is devoted to him and pray to him all the time.

Pari pari vidhavella branthiyendu thilidu

Paramapurushanannu nere nambidavarige

Duritha baadeghala guruthu thoruvude

Pari pari vidhavella=the many many confounding things of the world, branthiyendu tilidu=with the understanding that they are not real (or important), Paramapurushanannu nere nambidavarige=for those that have complete faith in the Parama Purusha(Govinda, Krishna, Sri Hari), Duritha=bad things that happen in life, baadhegala=painful things that happen in life, guruthu thoruvude=will they make their presence known?

Meaning: For those that ignore the things of the world (i.e. are not bothered by happenings in the world) and have complete and total faith in Govinda (Sri Hari, Krishna), will bad and painful things happen? (the implication being no bad things will happen to the Lord’s devotee).

Kadu murkhanadarenu, dushkarmava hididathanadarenu
Jadanadarenu alpa jatiyaadarenu

Bidade Praladana salahida Hariya

Kadu murkhanadarenu=even if one is a complete fool, dushkarmava hididatharadarenu= even if one is performing evil deeds, Jadanadarenu=even if one is a lazy person, alpa jaatiyaarenu=even if one is a lower caste person, Bidade Prahadana salahida Hariya= remember (pray to) Sri Hari who always took care of Prahlada (his devotee)

Meaning: Sri Purandara Dasa implies that even if one is otherwise imperfect in life- a foolish person, an evil or lazy person or one from a lower caste- it doesn't matter. Lord Sri Hari, who constantly took care of his devotee Prahlada, will take care of even such a person. Such is the power of medidating on the Lord's holy name (Govinda).

Patakiyadarenu sarva prani ghatakiyadarenu

Neetiya bittu dushkarmiyadarenu

Preetiyinda Ajamilana salahida Hariya

Patakiyadarenu=even if one has performed many evil deeds in life,
sarva prani goathakiyadarenu=even if one harms all animals,
Neetiya bittu=having quit neeti (correct way of life),
dushkarmiyadarenu=one is doing bad deeds, Preetiyinda Ajamilana
salahida Hariya=remember Sri Hari who took care of Ajamila with love

Meaning: Medidating on the Lord's name (Govinda) will protect even
the person who has performed many ill deeds in life. Sri Purandara Dasa
gives the example of Ajamila, whose story is found in the Bhagavatha
Purana. Although Ajamila had done mostly bad deeds in life, calling
Narayana's name (he was actually calling out his son's name) on his
death bed led him to Vaikunta, the lord's abode in heaven.

Sakala theertha yathreya madidantha

Nikhila punyada phalavu,

Bhakuthipurvakavaagi bidadanudinadalli  Prakata Purandara Vittalana Naamada

Sakala=all, theertha yathreya=pilgrimages, madidantha=performed
Nikhila=exquisite, punyada phalavu=the fruits of punya (moral merit)
Bhakuthipurvakavaagi=in total devotion, bidadanudinadalli=all the time without fail
Prakata=Ever present, Purandata Vittalana Naamada=the glorious name of Purandara
Vittala (Govinda)

Meaning: When you meditate upon the Lord's name always with devotion, you will get
the moral merit of doing all the holy pilgrimages.
